Shopping online is always risky, so shopping online for a car is certainly not advisable. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has warned against some of the scams that are perpetuated by online car sellers. Make sure that you are always careful about the person you are purchasing a vehicle from. If you are sending money to someone you do not know, it is important to be cautious.

A buyer should be suspicious when:

  • A car is priced alarmingly low according to other research you may have done
  • The seller claims to be out of the state or country
  • The listing does not have a phone number
  • The seller will ask that you use an online escrow service that they have chosen
  • The person that receives the call is referred to as a “pick up agent”
  • Payment must be wired to another country
  • The seller is very anxious to conclude the sale
